Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.

Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

— Langston Hughes

From The Collected Poems of Langston Hughes, ed. Arnold Rampersad (New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 2004), 32

Langston Hughes (1901-1967) “the bard of Harlem,” was an incredible American poet novelist, and playwright. Dreams was the one that introduced me to his poetry. Through poetic artistry, Hughes expressed imageries of endurance through the crucible of life within the urban context.
