“The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God” — Abraham Lincoln.
The brief except from the October 3 1863 Proclamation of Thanksgiving announced by President Abraham Lincoln sets the right attitude for today’s festivities.
There is always something to be thankful. Even in the midst of great strife, despite the sinfulness of humanity, the Lord’s mercy endures. He sends the rain. He causes the crops to grow. We reap the bounty of His goodness. So, we are right to give thanks.
I thank all of you for your friendship. I am grateful for every brief moment that we spend together. I appreciate each one of you.
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you” (1 Thess. 5:18, NKJV)
